The Best Places to Travel in Australia in April
April is by far one of Australia’s favourite months to travel outside of the summer holiday period, with both public holidays and school holidays combining to make it a great time for an early-mid-year break. However with the beginning of autumn comes a few changes in both climates and temperatures that make the go-to choice of travel destinations slightly different to those from the previous summer months. So what are the best places to pack your bags and head to during the month of April? Here’s our “Top 3 Best Places to Travel in Australia in April” list:
The Great Barrier Reef - April offers all the watery fun of the Great Barrier Reef with much less of the humidity that can leave you drenched in sweat during summer. Clear skies combine with calm waters to make it the ideal month of the year to get out and explore the greatest natural Wonder of the World that Australia has to offer, with glass-bottom boat tours in particular being a top choice this time of year. Due to its size, the Great Barrier Reef is accessible from numerous departure points that serve as a great springboard for enjoying its waters and islands such as Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays – simply take your pick and then get out and explore!
Ayers Rock / Uluru / Kakadu - While the so-called “Heart of Australia” looks spectacular any time of year, April’s cooler weather (combined with far fewer number of flies than summer!) and sunny skies make it an extremely popular month for making a pilgrimage to Uluru or the nearby rock formation of the Olgas. Both geological wonders are known for their characteristic red colouring, and the clear air only serves to enhance the spectacle of each during the best times of the day – sunrise and sunset. If large rocks aren’t really your thing, you can still enjoy the bounty of the Northern Territory at nearby Kakadu National Park, which stands as a living testament to the diversity of the Australian environment. A day trip to Kakadu will reveal to you one of the most varied yet delicate ecosystems in the country; one that is teeming with native Aussie plant and animal life as well as spectacular waterfalls tumbling into eagerly-waiting pools below.
The Barossa Valley - South Australia’s famed wine country is at its best during April, with the Vintage Wine Festival taking place during this month that serves as a showcase of not just the wines but also the carnivals, dance events, and rich local produce that have made the region increasingly popular. As a place with a distinctly European feel, it’s a great choice of travel destinations for those who aren’t too keen on either the typical beach/island or rugged outback choices.
